I have 3 Bible verses to share that have been foundational to my Christian journey. If you are new to faith these will set a great tone for your journey, and if you’re established these verses will reinforce your path.
ROMANS 12:2
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2 NLT
This is important! As someone newer to faith or trying to establish a deeper connection with God, let’s really let this one sink in. There are millions of behaviors and customs in this world, how do we know which ones to follow and which ones to reject? How exactly do we let God transform us into a new person by changing the way that we think? As you read the Bible, reflect on it, talk about it with others, and pray on it, God will transform the way that we filter and process information. I can honestly say that I feel softer and more at peace by reading the Bible and inviting God to reshape my thoughts and behaviors. Think of your brain as Play-Doh. As we go, knowing what behaviors and customs to foster or discourage within ourselves will become easier to recognize. “Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
So that you can be consciously aware of the changes occurring within you, I highly recommend journaling or taking notes on your current customs, behaviors, and ways of thinking! It will be so interesting to look back and see your humble beginnings. Click here for a few journal prompts to help kick-start you.
PROVERBS 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT
I just want to crawl into your ear and repeat “Do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will.” over and over until it’s a part of you. One thing I have to tell myself constantly is “I know nothing.” Let’s just humble ourselves real quick: there is so much that we do not and will never understand. Divine forces are at work, baby! So to depend on our own understanding would be selling ourselves very short. All we have to do is pursue what’s important to Him and trust Him. That’s it! Then He will show us what to do. This might be hard to do when you’re so used to inserting your own will. I know it has been/is for me! But as I’ve put down more of my wants, and picked up more of His, He has provided me more guidance and discernment. Fun Fact: I’ve been praying for more guidance and discernment every day for months, so I turn to this verse often. If you want to deepen your connection to God I urge you to become one with this verse!
GALATIANS 5:22-23
“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” Galatians 5:22-23 NLT
Doesn’t that sound so rich!? I need ALL of the fruit that Galatians 5:22-23 describes. Hello, we’re striving for diamond-studded demeanors around here so of course this is foundational! Taking a peek at what lies ahead is a huge part of what inspires me to get and stay connected to God. I think to myself, “What do I need to do to get the Holy Spirit to just hijack my body; and take over my mind, mouth, and limbs?” If we’re coming for the fruit that is promised, our connection to God needs to be solid. Keep this verse in mind and read it often for inspiration to deepen the forming or established bond.
